Hannes is the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Fine Software, the makers of JXL. Apart from building great Jira apps, Hannes loves motorcycles, mint ice cream, and Mick Jagger.

Spreadsheet issue editing for Jira: Introducing JXL

In 15 years at Atlassian combined, Daniel and Hannes, the makers of JXL, saw customers using Jira in incredibly versatile and wonderful ways; the power of Jira, as much as the creativity of its customers, seems to have no limits. Yet, while some tasks are perfectly smooth and easy to do in Jira, others can be less intuitive. So difficult sometimes that customers invent all sorts of workarounds, such as what’s been called the “Circle of Excel” - to export issues from Jira to Excel or Google Sheets, view and edit the data there, and sometimes re-import to Jira. Surely, Daniel and Hannes thought, there must be a smarter way to serve these customers - and so decided to build JXL, spreadsheet issue editing for Jira.

Built with the goal to combine the power of Jira with the familiarity of spreadsheets, JXL offers its user highly customizable sheet views right inside Jira, without the need to export any data. Designed with years of Atlassian experience, JXL feels native and seamlessly fits into any Jira environment, making project management, roadmap prioritisation, development sprint planning, backlog maintenance, or requests triage a breeze.

Project and product managers, Jira administrators, engineers, designers, IT professionals, support staff, and all kinds of knowledge workers use JXL to create tailored views for their jobs. They enjoy the freedom to arrange every last detail of a sheet to fit their team’s or individual way of working. By updating and assigning tasks all in-line in one place, they save time, work smarter together, and supercharge their workflow.

JXL’s wide-ranging capabilities include column sorting, filtering and resizing, keyboard commands and shortcuts, marking, copying and pasting single or multiple cells in one go, undoing and redoing any changes, a status bar for cell range aggregations, support for all Jira fields, and much more. JXL’s sheet editing experience allows users to freely define their sheet scope and to manage table columns to their liking. Upcoming features include issue ranking and hierarchy grouping, fine-grained sheet permissions, cell formulae and integrations with external tools and data, etc.

Today, JXL is successfully used in some of the world’s largest Jira Cloud sites. With its unique architecture, it loads thousands of issues in seconds and keeps any data secure within Jira.

In this talk, we take JXL from installation to action in real-world use cases, from small team to enterprise scenarios with hundreds of projects, and tens of thousands of issues. We show how JXL integrates with Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Jira Work Management, as well as your very own Jira customizations, and glimpse into the internals of an app that was created from the ground up for performance, scalability, and security. We share what’s ahead for JXL - and couldn’t be more excited to hear how it could fit your workflow!
